Last Saturday, 8 of us took to the streets of Edinburgh to launch Project Truth. The sun was splitting the skies, but the wind was also shaking the city! After a few sprints chasing baby display boards and leaflets down the street, and with the help of lots of double sided tape, drawing pins and string, we eventually managed to make a wind proof display table that not even the Scottish wind could tear down.
Our team took to the streets with big smiles and an eagerness to share the pro-life message! After a bit of a nervous start, the team were soon bouncing around the street distributing flyers to passers-by and pointing them towards our information stall. My favourite catch line for handing out the leaflets was from Anita who caught people’s attention with “You look like a man/woman who’d like to take a leaflet!” This line combined with her big smile and enthusiasm worked wonders!
Some people told us that they didn’t agree with what we were doing, to which we replied – “that’s fair enough, but we will still keep doing it, because people have a right to know this information” Apart from a few negative remarks here and there, the general response was extremely positive – because our message is positive – life is beautiful; so love and protect it.
Two of the most touching encounters that I had were with expectant mothers, the first woman came over to the stall with her husband and they told us they were expecting their first baby and that she was 12 weeks pregnant. I showed her the fetal model which depicted a child at 12 weeks gestation and she was extremely moved to discover the actual size of her baby in the womb, she unzipped her jacket and put her hand on her tummy in a little moment of awe. Then she called her husband to come and see the model saying “look, this is the size of our baby!” They spent a few minutes looking at our stall and chatting to us, before they left I asked if I could take a picture of them with the fetal model and they were happy to oblige –
This encounter really moved me, because it encompassed what it means to be pro-life – an understanding that the life inside the mother’s womb is beautiful, it is precious and is something to be awestruck by and celebrated. I wished them well as they went on their way, happy to have met such a lovely couple who couldn’t wait to meet their first child. This was the first of two conversations I had with an expectant mum, the second woman was also amazed to see a model depicting the size of her baby in the womb, as were all of her friends.
During the 3 hours we spent on the street we handed out over 500 Project Truth leaflets, chatted to a good number of people and generally had a great day doing pro-life mission work, finished off at the pub where we warmed up our faces which were had taken a good beating from the wind!:)
Getting off to such a good start has given me great hope that this is the beginning of something which will be powerful and effective in the pro-life movement in Scotland. It is simple, positive, fact based and full of energy because of our awesome youth team!:)
We are already looking forward to taking the Project to Dundee for our next event on Saturday 18th May!
Thanks for all your support!:)
