Abortion statistics are published annually and are derived from the notifications to the chief medical officer for Scotland under the ABORTION ACT 1967.  Statistics just released show

  • Abortion in Scotland has jumped by 2.6% overall to 12,082 per year
  • There has been a huge jump of 17.5% for mothers in the age category 35-39.
  • The most likely age for women having abortions is 20-24 who account for 30% of all abortions.
  • In Scotland the majority of abortions are medical abortions which means RU486 is used to induce delivery of the baby at an early stage.
  • 88.4% of abortions are under 9 weeks and 81% in total are medical.
  • Those in the most deprived areas are almost twice as likely to have abortions as those in the least deprived areas.
  • 98.3 % of abortions were for the social category (ground C):

“The pregnancy has NOT exceeded its 24th week and that the continuance of the pregnancy would involve risk, greater than if the pregnancy were terminated, of injury to the physical or mental health of the pregnant woman.”

The increased use of RU486, medical abortion, to induce delivery of the baby at an early stage is resulting in women seeking help after abortion much more quickly due to the trauma of seeing the aborted baby.  These abortions are happening at home, without medical supervision, and in the words of Edouard Sakiz chairman of the company that made RU486

“As abortifacient procedures go RU486 is not at all easy to use.

It is an appalling psychological ordeal.”

SPUC Scotland has a sister organisation Abortion Recovery Care and Healing (ARCH) to help the women, men and their friends and families devastated by an abortion experience.  We know abortion hurts women and takes an innocent life.  There is always a better solution than abortion. Every abortion is a tragedy and to see an increase in Scotland in 2015 to 2016 is heartbreaking.

March for Life was held in May this year in Birmingham and saw a huge growth in pro-life supporters.  Over 2000 people marched to protect ‘Life from Conception – No Exception!’
